Why this isn't your final quote

We can't give you a 100% exact number until your surgeon sees your case in your medical video consultation. Your final quote may move from this estimate based on additional studies your surgeon may need, your specific anatomy, or projected recovery time. Most patients land within 15% of what you're seeing here — we'd rather tell you that upfront than surprise you later.

About this procedure

What is orthognathic surgery? Corrective surgery that repositions the upper jaw (maxilla), lower jaw (mandible), or both, to fix a misaligned bite, facial asymmetry, or breathing problems. It is the definitive solution when braces alone cannot correct how the jaws meet.

Who is it for? Patients with an underbite, overbite, open bite, facial asymmetry, chronic jaw pain, or obstructive sleep apnea caused by jaw position. It is usually planned alongside orthodontics.

What is included in the Wellum package? Surgeon and hospital fees, operating room, general anesthesia, and inpatient monitoring. Performed by a board-certified maxillofacial surgeon in a full hospital operating room. Pre-surgical orthodontics, when needed, is coordinated with your local orthodontist.

What does recovery look like? 7 nights recommended in Guadalajara. Most swelling resolves over 4–6 weeks, with a soft diet during early healing. We schedule virtual follow-ups and coordinate post-op care with your home dentist or orthodontist.

Common question (how is this priced so much lower than the US? The difference is structural) operating room and surgeon overhead, not the complexity of the surgery or the standard of care. The same hardware (titanium plates and screws) and surgical protocol are used.

Your recovery, day by day

This is what a typical patient experience looks like. Every case varies — your surgeon will adjust based on your progress.

Day / Phase What to expect
Day -1 Arrival Pickup, recovery house check-in. Pre-op labs, 3D imaging review, and consultation with your surgeon.
Day 0 Surgery day 2–4 hour orthognathic (jaw) surgery under general anesthesia. Overnight hospital stay for monitoring. Liquid diet begins.
Day 1–2 Hospital monitoring Swelling peaks. Jaw supported with elastics as directed. Liquid diet. Discharge to recovery house when stable.
Day 3–5 Recovery house care Cold compresses, elevation, and gentle walking. Liquid diet continues. Oral hygiene routine begun.
Day 6–9 Wound check Follow-up with surgeon. Swelling easing. Transition from liquid to soft diet as directed. Elastics adjusted.
Day 10–14 Cleared to fly home Final review. Most visible swelling resolved. Soft diet and elastics schedule for home provided.
Week 3–12 Virtual follow-ups Weekly video check-ins. Jaw function and bite settle. Full recovery and final result over 8–12 weeks.

Frequently asked questions about this procedure

Why are medical costs in Mexico so much lower than in the US or Canada?

Lower price does not mean lower quality. Three structural factors explain the difference:

  1. Currency and cost of living: Surgeon salaries, hospital staff, and operating costs in Mexico are denominated in pesos, which are structurally lower than US/Canadian wages — the same surgical hour costs less to produce.
  2. No insurance overhead: Mexican healthcare doesn't carry the administrative cost of US private insurance billing, malpractice insurance premiums, or hospital network markups, which together can represent 30–50% of US procedure prices.
  3. Direct surgeon-patient pricing: Our partner surgeons set transparent flat fees with no third-party intermediary inflating the cost.

The technology, surgical technique, and hospital infrastructure are equivalent — many of our surgeons trained in the US, Brazil, or Europe and use the same FDA-approved devices and implants used at home.

What is included in the Wellum package price?

Every Wellum quote is fully transparent. A typical package includes:

  • Surgeon's professional fee (board-certified specialist)
  • Anesthesiologist's fee
  • Operating room and hospital stay at an internationally accredited or nationally certified hospital with on-site ICU
  • Implants, medications, and surgical supplies
  • Recovery hotel or recovery house for the recommended stay
  • Airport pickup and ground transportation in Guadalajara
  • Bilingual Wellum coordinator (24/7 during your stay)
  • Pre-op studies and lab work
  • Post-op clinical visits with your surgeon before flying home
  • 12 weeks of post-op follow-up care from the Wellum team

What's not included by default: airfare, optional excursions, additional procedures not in the original quote. These are clearly itemized so there are no surprises.

Does the price include follow-up?

Yes. The 12 weeks of post-op care from the Wellum team and weekly video check-ins with your surgeon are included in every package. The exact scope is documented in your quote before you commit.

What payment methods do you accept?

We currently accept wire transfer and major debit/credit cards through a secure payment processor. Monthly payment plans via medical financing partners are coming soon — ask your coordinator for the latest options during your free consultation.

How does payment actually work? Wire, card, deposit timing?

We make payment as straightforward as possible for international patients:

Booking deposit (refundable): A small deposit holds your surgery date and surgeon's calendar slot. Payable by credit card via our US-registered payment processor (Stripe). Fully refundable up to 30 days before surgery, partially refundable within 30 days based on costs already committed to your case.

Balance payment options:

  • Credit card (Visa, Mastercard, Amex) via secure Stripe processing — most common, instant, US-issuer-friendly
  • Wire transfer to our US entity (Medismart LLC) — for amounts where credit limits are an issue
  • Hybrid — deposit by card, balance by wire — patient choice

Timing:

  • Deposit at booking
  • 50% of remaining balance 7 days before travel
  • Final balance settled in person at the hospital before discharge

Why a US entity matters for US patients: Charges appear on your statement as a US merchant, not a Mexican one. Reduces fraud-flag risk with your bank, simplifies dispute resolution, and gives you US consumer protection on credit card transactions.
